Southbound
Waking up in a sea of enmity
could this be my last recourse
will these men conspire to end me
must I mount this feeble horse ride into the southern distance leave behind this live I’ve led
shall I risk my my own existence
o’er these words that must be said
Southbound as the wind blows past me
to the town I’ve left behind
will this plague of hate outlast me
will I find some peace of mind
Onwards cross the scorching sands
my sole companion left as dead
now on foot in foreign lands
and still that price upon my head
the weeks cocoon, fly off as years
and still I wander wondering
has my life been worth the tears
and will my last breath mean a thing
Southbound as the wind blows past me
to the town I’ve left behind
will this plague of hate outlast me
will I find some peace of mind
Seed of Love
When it rains it pour
There will be water 8 days in store
Growing in pools right there on the floor
Flowin downstairs and out the door
When you’re in drought don’t be in doubt
Brother for now you can do without
But when the beautiful clouds come out
Try not to drown try not to shout
Man when your dry life can be hard
That queen of hearts is a fickle card
When your hard life can be dry
No matter how hard you try
Just, when you think you’re stuck
Bleeding and bleeding and down in the muck
A change of winds a bit of luck
And girls
Just dying to give you a phone number
Give me a call here’s my phone number
Brother that’s all, just a phone number
But that’s all you need
Man get that phone number
So the seed of love
Seed of love no matter how small
Can blossom and grow or do nothing at all
But when the rains begin to fall
Seed of love will sprout
If only you’d call
When things are juicy and wet
Brother you better not forget
Don’t go run out after all you can get
That’s a good way to get someone upset
Brother your thirsty I know
But even though rushing waters flow
You got to try to take it slow
Or right back to the desert you’ll go
Cause there’s many clouds’ up in that sky
And though you’d like to drink and drive
It’s not a good idea to try
All that just keep flooding by
Picture just one cloud
The one that you sought
Will rain on you if she sees you fought
Be in her rain
To love her a lot
To get really wet and to touch her soul
Seed of love
No matter how small
Can blossom and grow or do nothing at all
But when the rains begin to fall
Seed of love
Seed of love
No matter how small
Can blossom and grow or do nothing at all
But when the rains begin to fall
Seed of Love
Conduit
well, the devil’s blowing coal
through the smokestacks of your mind
Dylan’s hanging on the cross
the piano’s doing fan
Jacob’s on the ladder
smoking candy cigarettes
the chinaman’s got heartburn
and a thousand tv sets
with arms as big as airplanes
he ripped his momma’s blouse
the preacher man is hiding now
but we know he’s in the house
and you think I’ve depthed the fathoms
but you’d better guess again
I don’t understand these spirits, no.
I only channel them.
the taxidermist picked me up
at 22:15
he fixed my troubled mind
and then he took me home again
the river’s melting quickly
but the sky has disappeared
the Mohicans don’t leave nothing
but a single unshed tear
the midway’s closing down
but it’s been a lovely run
and 50 years means nothing
if the town’s been having fun
and you think I’ve depthed the fathoms
but you’d better guess again
I don’t understand these spirits, no.
I only channel them.
Down to the River
I went down to the river
Blowing out onto the sea
On my way to the ocean
Let the spirit swallow me
I got low down in the water
I let the current guide my bones
I got 9 kinds of trouble
I’m just trying to find my way home
Oh 20 some years of living
And a thousand wasted days
I have loved a lot of women
Many times I’ve gone wrong ways
And I came down to the water
A dip to cleanse my soul
They keep telling me that I’m just a babe
But baby why do I feel so old
This is the verge of a breakthrough
It’s a fine line that cannot be bent
And I felt like a river ran dry
But I don’t know where all the rainwater went
And I believe that we are all dead or dying
But I see different in the blue light
There is no such thing as a dawn or dusk
It’s daylight until it is not
You gotta fly through the jimmy
You gotta run to the west
You gotta rage against the dying of the light
Live for the moment that’s left
You gotta fly through the jimmy
You gotta run to the west
You gotta rage against the dying of the light
Live for the moment that’s left
Cause there is no such thing as a dying man
We are alive till the moment we’re dead
A dying man is just a living man
Who hasn’t run out of his last bit of breath
I went down to the river
Blowing out onto the sea
On my way to the ocean
Let the spirit swallow me
I got low down in the water
I let the current guide my bones
I got 9 kinds of trouble
I’m just trying to find my way home
find my way home
find my way home
find my way home
Stranger
When I was a child, my mother
Would tuck me in to bed
And each night as she kissed me
These are the words that she said:
She said: Don’t go to bed with strangers
Don’t play with the dead
Always keep your wits sharp
Like an axe inside the shed.
When I was just a school boy
My father, he spoke unto me
He said: boychick, my son, Don’t trust anyone
And remember that nothing is free
And the world is full of strangers
The world is full of dread
The world is full of sharpened wits
And millions of tears you will shed.
When I was young man
My professor at university
Said: Advice is Corrupting!
Don’t ever be trusting!
Don’t show your emotion!
Human suffering is an ocean,
And it’s dark at the bottom of the sea.
And there’s no such thing as a stranger
We’re all equally backwards and wrong
Sharpen axes not wits
Bones are broken by sticks
And you’ll never be free till you’re strong.
Well, young men grow older
And the world gets colder
Though it never was warm to begin.
Don’t let down your guard
For the reaper works hard
And he will not take pause ‘till you’re dead.
Now I am old and I’m rusty
My troubles like sand on the beach
They can’t be calculated, I always have waited
For something that’s just out of reach.
And I to myself am a stranger
My heart is of iron and lead
My world is resounding with miseries abounding
There’s only one thing to be said.
